IF YOU BECOME DISABLED
If you’re a teacher facing a physical or mental health condition that prevents you from performing your job—and it’s confirmed by a doctor as likely to be permanent in alignment with the TPPC’s criteria—you may be able to retire on a disability pension.
It’s important to note that once your eligibility is confirmed and approved, you’ll be considered eligible to retire under the terms of the TPP, and must do so.
Disability pension
Eligibility
To be eligible, and receive a disability pension based on your total years of service to the date of your disability retirement, you must:
- Meet the definition of disability, and
- Have at least five years of pensionable service.
If you have fewer than five years of pensionable service, a refund of your contributions will be available.
The complete disability definition, and full details about disability pension eligibility and benefits, are provided in the Plan Text.

Status of your disability pension
The TPPC will let you know the status of your application, and if approved, your disability pension will start on the next pension pay date.
Understanding ongoing eligibility requirements
If you began receiving your disability pension before reaching your normal retirement date (age 62), there will be an ongoing process to ensure you continue to be eligible.
- You may be asked to attend a medical exam, with notice provided in writing, to confirm that you still meet the eligibility criteria.
- If you’re unable to attend a required medical exam, or if it’s determined that you no longer meet the eligibility requirements, your disability pension payments may temporarily be paused.
- Payments can resume if:
- You again become eligible by meeting the criteria, or
- You reach your normal retirement date
